""What in the world is Mylar,"" you might ask. On Saturday, December 1, Kathy Hawk will lead an Arts4Kids printmaking workshop for the Arts Council of Greater Kingsport. Children will use Mylar (a plastic coated sheet which allows the artist to apply color to it and then make a print from that design) and a large printing press to learn a unique type of printing. Supplies will be provided for this fun and different type of workshop. The workshop is being sponsored in part by the Art Guild of Kingsport and will be held in their studio, room 313 at the Kingsport Renaissance Center from 1-2:30 PM.
Workshop instructor Kathy Millhorn Hawk, is a 30 year veteran of teaching art in the Kingsport City Schools. She has also been an adjunct instructor at VA Intermont College and ETSU. She has been active with the National Art Education Association and Kingsport Art Guild. She currently pursues her own artwork by exhibiting and showing in area exhibitions. Her work may be seen in Kingsport at The Gallery of Local Artists, Hibbert-Davis Coffee Gallery, Main Art Center (Downtown Kingsport Association), and in Johnson City at Boones Creek Potter's Gallery.
In addition to the Arts4Kids Saturday club workshop, the Arts Council will offer a similar printmaking workshop at the VO Dobbins Community Center on Friday, Dec. 7. This workshop is for children in the Riverview community, as well as children participating specifically with that after-school program. Kathy Gibian will lead the outreach session.
Kathy Gibian is a painter and printmaker exhibiting work regionally. She has been a staff member/artist-in-residence at the William King Regional Arts Center in Abingdon, Virginia beginning in 1996. Kathy's love of music came first from her love of dance starting as a child in ballet and continues as her children's talents both in dance and music nourish her own enthusiasm for the arts.
